RE: chains for dually tires.....

:h OOHH, confusion abounds here. OP says he is leaving on Sept27 and the post is Oct 6? If you are leaving in October, I seriously doubt that you will run into much trouble. If it does start snowing, just hole up for a few hours until the DOT can clear the roads and be on your way again.

RE: Check out these Dyno numbers - 08 Diesels

I just caught the mention(?)of the problems with the 48RE. I agree with it being an issue when buying a Dodge. Not to be repeatative from another thread but, CHRYSLER could have stepped up and fixed this tranny by upgrading the torque converters and solenoids, instead coming up with BS excuses as to why it broke and leaving owners to pay the bills themselves. It's not an Allison! Please prove it! With a name like Lariat trucker I have to assume that you have a Ford, probably one of those junky 6.0L IH diesels too! Just go to the Dodge/Cummins forums and read all about it. :) Mav And on the flip side you can go to the Diesel place and read all about the almighty Allison failures too! So what is the point? Without statistical proof all this baloney about bad transmissions is just that baloney! Now if someone here is in the respective warranty departments and show proof positive that one is better or worse than the others then let him come forth. Until then it is all BS being spewed by people trying to prove a point. All of this is soo far off topic I am really surprised that the moderators have not closed it yet!

RE: Water Pump Help

Sure, it is the internal check valve leaking back to tank. Not a big deal IMHO. Every water pump I have ever owned on every RV has done that from time to time. Now, if it is running constantly then there is a problem.

RE: Vacuum Cleaner???

We have the built in Dirt Devil, Does a very good job of cleaning the trailer when we are on the road for a few days. Is it as good as the Dyson? No, but being built in it is totally hidden, stores easily and works.

RE: Jack Switch

Do a web search for Texas industrial electric. They offer a heavy duty reversing relay that will take care of the problems and allow you to use a simple 5 amp toggle switch which can be had from places like Radio shack for about 5 dollars, vs the 50 dollars for a switch capable of handling the 30 amp load. While you are at it, you can add an up limit safety switch so you don't need to buy new gear sets for that motor if you forget and let it go to the upper limit.

RE: buying a used RV in the US (UK travellers)

One other thing to remember, licensing fees and sales taxes can add considerable to the purchase price of any product. So, if you are going to be traveling around why spend a lot of your hard earned dollars (pounds) on something you will get no benefit from. Oregon for one has No sales tax and the license fees for your RV are reasonable. You might check out www.rallyautomart.com, www.olingertravelhomes.com,www.johnsonrvsales.com, as a couple of places in the Portland area. All are within a few miles of the airport, and all of them usually have a fairly large inventory of all sorts of RV's.

RE: Bug Bombs

Personally I bomb my RV's about once a year for good measures. There is no telling how many spiders and other creapy crawlers you have picked up while out in the woods and it is a simple solution. Like mentioned before, just be sure to air it out thoroughly before use.

RE: Newbie to RV------help confused by all the numbers

Like many of us. you have more hitch than truck. Yes the hitch will stand 10,500lbs. But the truck won't. The weight in the manuel. In your case. 7500lbs is what the MAX towing capacity of the truck is. Yes to tow that much you will need a WDH. But a grand is way too much for it. Anmd you will need a brake controler. No big deal. as for the 2403lb cap on the tires. That is 4806lbs on the rear. Got 2. You will never put that much on them. BTW. the ones in front will have the same weight rating. As for the 1792 axle rating. thats the KG. It is closer to 3600lbs, and should be higher on the back than front. So by what you have posted. After you have loaded the truck for towing. IMOP. You would be good with a 6500 to 7000lb loaded trailer. Sounds pretty close to me, But I personally would not go over a 6500 pound trailer GVWR as anymore will slow you up maybe more than you would like. Also you have to take into consideration that for every pound more than a 1/2 tank of fuel and a 150 pound driver you add to the truck reduces the amount of trailer you can tow. Equalizer hitches can be had used on places like Craigslist for probably a couple of hundred dollars. You will need a brake controller and for this do not skrimp or you will regret it. Get a prodigy the first time and be happy for ever. Or at least until the wife wants bigger. Remember that the 5.3L motor you have is probably coupled to a 3.42 rear end. while fine for commuting it is definitely NOT good for towing. So in real world the lighter you tow the happier you will be at the end of the day.

RE: stick

Generally speaking standard transmissions have a lower towing rating than automatics. this is because the weak ling in a standard is the clutch. If that is what you prefer driving, then by all means get one. Just be sure it's towing rating is up to the task. What??:? I always thought that the reason all the big diesels were manual is because the manual transmissions were much stronger than automatics! Have I been wrong all these years? Notice that I said that "generally speaking" It might be true that the manual transmission is stronger, however the clutch as someone else pointed out is the weak link. It is probably almost a moot point anyhow as you cannot get a stick behind a Duramax, Not sure about a Ford, so the only stick transmission behind a diesel might be in a Dodge behind the Cummins. and there are lots of complaints about the stock clutches being really junk. Oh and I do not believe there has been a cast iron transmission cast in a consumer pickup for probably close to 10 years now.

RE: Purchased a fifth wheel. Need help selecting tow vehicle.

So far only richfaa and bfl13 have hit it correctly. The numbers you quoted are advertised "dry" weights. Do you intend to tow your trailer "dry" and bring along another vehicle for all the pots/pans. clothes. food etc, etc, etc to pack in it? Didn't think so! You are starting from the totally wrong prospective. You MUST start looking at the GVWR for the trailer. Now, again all the crowd that proclaim that a GM 2500HD Duramax/Allison will be just fine have probably never weighed a truck fully loaded ready to camp. I have and can tell you from the get go an ext cab 4X4 will scale right at 7500 pounds in ready to camp configuration. If your trailer scales ready to camp at 12000, that will give you a pin weight of about 2400 pounds. So adding 12000 and 7500 you come up with 19,400 on a truck with probably 20000 GCWR. Looking at it another way, if you add the trucks weight of 7500 pounds and the pins weight of 2400 pounds you come up with 9900 pounds or 700 pounds over the trucks GVWR. So, based on all this the MINIMUM I could suggest is a 1 ton SRW, dually would probably be best .

RE: Dually vs. Single Rear Wheel

i have to agree with Georgeh. you COULD be over even a 3500/F350 dually with that large of a trailer. Without some accurate information about brand/model/GVWR of the trailer it is impossible to make even a slightly educated guess.

RE: Need TV tire advice

With Michelins most people report in excess of 50000 miles from them. They are definitely worth it to me.

RE: Columbia River Gorge

Glad you are enjoying Ore-Gun! Now for the rest of the trip South Somewhere South of Bandon there is a sign for a county park with camping facilities. Go there. It is quite small, but appears well kept. There is a short hike to the beach and a small lake in the dunes. Next is Humbug Mountain State Park. Just South of Gold Beach you will come to Pistol River State park. Day use only but the views! All I can say is I think it is one of the prettiest places on the entire Ore-Gun coast. Brookings comes up fast after that and a night at Brookings harbor RV park is a must. Basically a parking lot, but the view across the lot to the beach and ocean is great. If you are so inclined, just into California is First Chance Liquors. About the cheapest place in California to buy. Again, glad you enjoyed MY state and please come back and spend some more money. We need all the help we can get as the government is chasing all industry out as fast as possible.

RE: Breakdown

Sorry for your troubles. To answer your original question, many companies offer towing road side assistance that sort of thing. Best answer I can give is do not put yourself in a position of having a break down. Most breakdowns can be prevented with proper routine maintance. That way, if something is going bad it can be cought and fixed before a disaster occurs miles from home. You did not give many specifics, so can I ask, How old and how many miles on the truck? How big a trailer are you pulling? and lastly what is your actual true camping weight for the combination?

RE: For a company that claimed solvency

Too bad more people do not realize or understand that this fiasco all started in 1977 and was further stuffed down our throats in 1996, And as late as 2005 over site was blocked by ranking members of the house banking committee to protect their friends in Fannie and Freddy! Do I smell a revolution coming?

RE: Dummy with a Diesel

OOPS sticky fingers. Yes I meant to say Daylight Running Lights Also as mentioned the high idle feature lets you set the idle up above the stock 800 RPM. Used for times when you need to sit for long periods of time at idle. Also the fog lights can be programmed to allow them to be on when the high beams are used. One last thing I failed to mention earlier, When in town, select 4th gear on the selector and that way the speeds in town will not be too low causing problems.

RE: How do they know...

As to your original question, there is a line of code in the computer that tracks engine hours/RPM/vehicle speed and a few other parameters and determines based on its program when it is best to change the oil. Leave it in till the light comes on and change then. Save the dyno oil for us oil burners.
